Cultural criminology emerged in the mid-nineties with defining texts written by Jock Young, Keith Hayward, and Jeff Ferrell, among others. Cultural criminology is designed to place issues of meaning, symbolism, and interpretation at the forefront of the criminological enterprise. Seeking clarity helps strengthen the philosophical objections to normative cultural relativism. Cultural criminologists argue that both crime and crime control operate as cultural endeavors, with their personal and social consequences constructed out of contested processes of collective representation and interpretation.
